Where Eagles Dare

An early start today to make the most of the good weather whilst it lasts gave us the chance to catch these deer up close having their breakfast.
I was guiding father and son duo Alistair and Tom up Eagle Ridge on Lochnagar as their first experience of multipitch climbing. The route being of 4 star quality attracted seasoned walker and scrambler Alistair to it. Indeed it was 4 Star quality today; with all the pitches nice and dry, just enough sun through scattered cloud and a very light breeze to cool us down in the heat.

The guys at the belay Stance on the top of pitch 2.

Traversing one of the 'Knife edge' or 'Whale back' slabs.

Approaching the wall before the 'Sentry Box'.

Only room for two in the 'Sentry Box'.

Two shots of Tom tackling the crux moves.

The final easy slab before topping out.

Looking from the Trig point north towards Ben Macdhui (centre) and the Northern Cairngorms.

The route itself only took us four and a half hours which was excellent going by two multipitch novices. After lunch on the summit and a stroll down off the hill we continued to be blessed by warmth, sun and what seemed to be an abundance of wildlife including owls, mountain hares and what seemed to be the whole herd of deer we saw in the morning numbering between twenty to thirty.
