This week I'm working again at the SDW (Soldier Development Wing) in Sennybridge. The army love acronyms - so you're going to get a load more in a minute. I'm normally teaching the SuT's (Soldiers under training) their AT (adventure training) week. So I got to work to discover I'd been put on training Claire Sansom for her RCI (rock climbing instructor) award in November. Claire is an IO full time (Instructional Officer). The RCI award allows people working for the army to teach and lead rock climbing with 2 army students at any grade, anywhere in the world!!
So we grabbed some gear - luckily I had ALL my climbing gear in the car (surprise!), grabbed a bus and headed for Wintour's Leap - in the rain..! Terrific!
In the drizzle, we got down to the first climb Claire had chosen to lead - 'Zelda' HS, in The Far South Bay.. We got totally kitted up standing at the start - and the heavens opened wider and the limestone became a slip fest - okay, not that route then!!
Change of plan to a combo with 'Central Rib Route I' (S) and 'Central Rib Route II' (VS last pitch) in the South Bay. Kitted up again and ..... yes.. it's dry - awesome, rain stopped and wind fast drying out the limestone.... Time to climb.
So off we went, looking at dealing with novices in the multi pitch environment, teaching students, stance management, ropework, scenarios etc etc...
So where is she doing her RCI training/assessment week - SPAIN on sport - as a paid week of work !!!! Not jealous at all !
