Uni Exped - Trying To Avoid The Rain

Blair about to walk up into the mist
Thursday morning at the UHI WHC (University of the Highlands and Islands - West Highland College), we were set to go on a 2 day walking exped with the first year ATM degree students. The weather looked awful in the west, with a great deal of rain forecast for the next 24 hours in particular - so it was an obvious plan to head as east as possible to get a better weather forecast. So, we headed off to the Monadhliath Mountains from Newtonmore. On Thursday we got up to 570m, chose a camp spot that wouldn't flood over night with expected heavy rain, and set off for an afternoon/evening of micro nav in the mist. The next day the mist had lowered to below our camp spot but as we set off walking it had risen, so navigation was easier for the rest of the day. A great expedition - and on Friday I only wore my jacket for about 15 minutes - better weather than expected - brilliant. Thanks guys for a good 2 days.

The group navigating in the thick mist
It wasn't quite night, but the light was fading at the end of Thursday as we were navigating back to the tents
Finally back at the tents - time for an evening meal on Thursday night.
Friday morning - the mist had lowered to engulf our tents - can you see the 4 tents? - just about
With this misty view from my tent on Friday morning - no sight of the other tents at times, it looked set to be a day of very poor visibility
The cloud rose through the early morning, and we got a great view from the summit of A' Chailleach
