Intro Winter Mountaineering

Emma doing well on steep ground

Today I joined the Jagged Globe Intro to Winter Mountaineering team. We headed for Stob Coire nan Lochan looking for a journey and some steeper ground. We quickly found a grade 1 gully on the way up to the ridge line. The team did well on their feet putting into practice what they had learnt yesterday.

Higher up on the ridge we found a little tight squeeze which was fun although not strictly on the lesson plan for the day!

Winds were forecast to strengthen towards dusk, but we managed to get to the summit in only moderate winds, but by now the temperature had risen and so we were in the rain - but happy.

On the way down in the rain

On our way down we took a look at all the other gullies to work out what grade 1 and grade 2 ground was like. A great day.

The recent thaw has taken it's toll on the Coire with a massive loss of snow, although there were several teams out learning their winter skills and snowcraft.
