The obvious rock fall scar on the Zig-Zags |
Today on day 2 of the Winter Summits Course, with a forecast of strong winds we went for a climb of the Zig-Zags on Gearr Aonach up into Stob Coire nan Lochan. Linda, David and Anna all want to use this course as a stepping stone for preparation for the Winter Mountaineering Course next year, and also for their expeditions in the next couple of years. With that in mind we're doing a few grade I climbs this week. We were in the shelter from the winds for most of the day, but got some winds of about 30mph near the top of Gearr Aonach. The walk across the top into Stob Coire nan Lochan involved a little post holing (fun!) where there was a lot of deep flat slab. I always sank into the slab, making every step hard, but Anna and Linda seemed to be able to walk on the surface without sinking at all - not fair - how heavy am I ! On the slopes down into the lower coire I was glad of an opportunity for a good glissade/bum slide - but we used half of the slope as a quick venue for looking at ice axe arresting. With better weather on Wednesday the team are up for a bigger adventure..

There are lots of large scoured patches on the approach slopes to the cliffs (only just seen in this photo I think). |
A closer view of the scoured slopes |
This wasn't scoured - deep snow - post holing - trail breaking can be exhausting |
I found large areas of graupel in the surface of the snowpack in some places |
