Low level Day
Today with the Mountaineering team we stayed low, working on a few of the core skills that mountaineers need. We started with the most basic ropework, knots, anchors, and then went on to the first ever abseil for most of the team. This was in at the deep end for some but an experience they were glad to have. This sets them up well for some of the challenges they are setting themselves for 2012 - for example the summer Cuillin Ridge, and in particular the Inaccessible Pinnacle.
After a morning with ropes and knots we moved on to a an afternoon in Glencoe with compasses and maps. We looked at developing their skills of navigation focusing on accurately following a bearing in summer and winter conditions and estimation of distance. We discussed human error and compounded navigational inaccuracies - before we successfully found the van in the car park!
Tomorrow the well rested legs will get stretched on a jounrney across the snow.
